Whisco TV Guide

The first week of television in a Gulf flat

The keys work, the air conditioning works, and the television on the wall plays whatever the last tenant left on it. Here is a setup that does not depend on that tenant’s stick.

Day one

Connect the television to the flat’s internet. Install YouTube if it is not there. Sign in with your own account, not the one saved on the stick you were offered downstairs. Subscribe to the news channel from home and one entertainment channel you already trust. Play a live news stream and leave it on for ten minutes. If it holds, the line is good enough.

Delete leftover paid apps you do not have an account for. A saved login on a second-hand stick is someone else’s bill, and it stops the week they change the password.

What to ignore in the building chat

The first message in a new compound chat is often a menu: sports, films, a yearly price. The news on that menu is already free on YouTube. The sports are the part the seller cannot legally include. You do not need the menu to watch the bulletin tonight.

Whisco is the other list: official news embeds, and films whose Archive page says they are free. It is not a replacement for a sports package, and it will not pretend to be one.

If the television is dumb

A Chromecast or a Fire TV stick you buy yourself, signed into your account, is enough. The stick is a remote for YouTube. It is not a product that should arrive “already loaded.” Loaded means someone else chose the channels, and you will not be able to explain those channels if the account is asked.

By the end of the week you want three subscriptions, a working live news channel, and no number in your phone labelled “channels.” That is the setup that still works after the seller leaves the building.
